My mom is a hard woman to shop for. I know that she would love to read if only she could find something that she’s interested in. She’s just very shallow and she says she has a short attention span (it’s just an excuse not to read) but she reads magazine articles. The only books I see her read are diet books and books on natural healing, Food Addiction, Organic and Natural foods, mercury poisoning, thyroid problems, and menopause. So its pretty hard to find a fiction book that’s exciting and interesting concerning these topics unless its written by a hypochondriac with weight problems.
On the other hand she likes decorating and real estate and rich people and really shallow ***** flick movies with dianne keaton and meg ryan. She also loves NYC and anything to do with the rich snobs who live in upper east manhattan…. but she grew up in brooklyn.
maybe i’ll just get her some chick-lit but I want it to be something that will hold her attention. Anyone have any ideas?
Wow, that is hard! I’m not sure I’d give her fiction at all, she doesn’t seem to like it and might just say thanks and not read it. Why not try some sort of diet book, like the Liver Cleansing Diet (always popular) or some sort of ‘kiss and tell’ by NYC society types?
Failing that, how a bout a double pass to the cinema for you and she to go and see a shallow chick-flick together, and have a relaxed coffee afterwards. It’s HER birthday after all!
Good luck and best wishes
curios incident of the dog in the night time–> good book for all ages
chicken soup for the soul
try her on a book ..2-3 yrs old now..you can still get it, tho…titled “running with scissors”…i think she would read a few pages & get hooked;it is that good..some serious stuff, tons of funny stuff in it….just a thought;i pronmise, it is an excellent book;you would love it, too…judy ptgs_jred hey, let me know..at..i am totally new to yahoo..so much to learn;good luck judy
If you’re intent on buying her fiction I’d say something like The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, but that may be a wee bit slow going for your mother.
So I recommend a Matthew Reilly book, these things are so fast paced you won’t believe it, you literally can’t put them down.
My favorites are ‘Ice Station’, ‘Area 7′ and ‘Scarecrow’ , the last is the fastest but it’s best to read in the order given because they’re part of the same series.
For standalone’s ‘Temple’ and ‘Contest’ are awesome.
Hope this helps!!
A gift card to your local bookstoure should help. If she is hard to please then, gift cards are definitely to go just put enough money to but a book, OK?
But if you really insists try and look at this:
Good Luck
My recommendation would be “The Queen Bee of Mimosa Branch” by Haywood Smith, or the Red Hat Club by the same author. “Queen Bee” is about a 50 year old woman who has just been divorced due to the fact that dear hubby has traded in for a younger Vegas model. She is now faced with the fact that she will have to return home to live with her overbearing and controlling 80 something year old mother, her father, her senile uncle, who believes a miniature cannibal lives under the table, and her aunt. She has to start over, new job, new friends, and a new outlook on life during the midst of menopause and hot flashes of the mas caliente variety. I was in my late twenties when I read it, and I laughed out loud numerous times. I recommend it to everyone.
The Red Hat Club and The Red Hat Club Rides Again are both good books, about a group of ladies…southern belles, that have known each other for the majority of their lives. They have been through it all together, marriages, children, grandchildren, but what will they do when one of the women needs them to pull together to help her through a cheating hubby or a dear friend is in desperate need. Hold on to your hats ladies, because it’s about to get crazy! Again both are good books, but “Queen Bee” was great!
Maybe u should try out Harry potter book set. It’s good for all ages.
My mom doesn’t ever read and also enjoys movies with Meg Ryan and Diane Keaton. However, since she retired, she started reading Nicholas Sparks’ books. They are definately sappy chick-lit, but I think every one of his books has been on the top 10 list when it came out. They’re not bad to read and also were made into movies that your mom probably saw.
I would recommend “A Walk to Remember” because it was my favorite! “The Notebook” and “Message in a Bottle” have also been made into movies.
Well, if she doesn’t like to read, you are probably wasting time and money, but if you insist, I would suggest something short and funny. The one that fills the bill for me is,
Anything Can Happen, by George and Helen Papashvily.
It is the story of a Russian immigrant during the 30’s or 40’s and what happens to him when he emigrates to the United States. It is a delightful, short little book. I laughed out loud several times. And I smiled all the way through it. You can probably get it at a used book store or order it from Amazon.com Marketplace.
