I recently posted this, but could tell by the answers that I needed to be more specific about a few things. First, I do NOT have hot flashes. In fact, in spite of entering meno, I still have estrogen dominance occasionally..about every 3 months or so. But this occurs whether I have it or not.
Also, this is NOT insomnia as far as not falling asleep. I fall asleep fine. I just wake up constantly after 2-3 am. Still tired, but constantly waking up. Aggravating.
As far as my progesterone–yes, it’s low. But it fell low years ago, with no sleep issues. I ONLY started having them when I finally stopped all periods about six months ago. Before that, even with rock-bottom progesterone, I fell asleep fine.
I have started using Melatonin–noticed nothing so far. Yes, I’m aware that you have to be careful with it.
Any suggestions on how to stay asleep? Certain herbs?

My ovaries fail to respond to increasing levels of FSH. I’ve had regular periods from 10-16; at 16 I began to train rigorously and my menses diminished. To ‘make things normal’ my ob-gyn had me put on the OrthoEvra patch, then the orthotricyclen Lo pill, then two other birth control pills from the ages of 19-20. I finally stopped taking the pill at 21. I am now 22 and have very high FSH levels. There is no obstruction and I did get a period this past June, so I have not entered menopause. My LH levels are also high; the estradiol is low. Thyroid is normal. ProLactin is normal. Before June, I had a period in July and October of 2006. The one in June came after a body wrap and the one in October came after taking Metformin for a month. The insulin only worked for 1 month. I think my lack of menses is due to the haphazard contraceptive use. Are there any herbs I can take? What can I do? How long should I wait? I am seeing a reproductive endocrinologist and he is just as stumped.
The endocrinologist even suggested on the 2nd visit that I am out of eggs. That is not possible as the FSH was high in May, I got a period in June, and now it is high again. You can’t get a period without ovulating. He also thinks I might be ingesting FSH in some way. How else can one ingest FSH??
I know I should talk to my doctor – that’s what I’m doing. I don’t have PCOS – that’s been ruled out as the only symptoom I have is absent menses. He doesn’t have a diagnosis – he’s just as confused. I have to believe what he says -he is the director of the Yale Women’s Center of Yale University Hospital – if he doesn’t know then who else will give me a better opinon. I am using this forum as a way to find alternatives.
I did undergo the progesterone challenege – and it didn’t work. My then OB-gym said that she was not concerned and that I would get my period. My RE has not tested my progesterone levels .
My primary care doctor said it could be PCOS but I don’t have any cysts and have only had two in the past twelve years. I was on the Metformin for three months and only got a period at the end of the very first month. My ER has since said that I do not have PCOS.

Well, here I am, a person who has ALWAYS slept like a rock. But since entering meno, I now wake up constantly after 3 am…..and I have started to SNORE!!!! I don’t have hot flashes, so can’t blame that. Are there any herbs that would help with the sleep issue?? This is maddening.
By the way, this is not insomnia. Insomnia is having trouble falling asleep. I fall asleep fine. This is waking up at 3-4 am, and waking up several more times before it’s time to get up for real. I also have no symptoms of estrogen dominance, nor do I have symptoms of too low estrogen i.e. hot flashes. And this is not peri-meno. I am now IN meno. .

Or, will you know you are starting menopause when you are on the pill? Will you still have normal periods? I am 32 and a bit young but the females in my family go through menopause young. I was just wondering because I am having horrible hot flashes at night and was wondering if the pill would mask menopause? Any help would be appreciated.

This is the deal, I’m getting really tired of PMS and all it implies. Sometimes I get really teary, others really angry, others really annoyed, this time, i’m scared. I’m freaking out over the smallest thing, and normally I’m a pretty strong girl. Any day of the week I can take anyone out and beat them, I stand up for myself, I show compassion, i’m emotionally smart. But when menstruation arrives i’m a wreck! Is there anything that can help… food to eat, herbs to use in tea or cigarretes, mantras? anything please. Tell me what works for you or someone you know. I’m on the pill which balances a little bit of the pain i used to have. Pain is no longer the issue now anyways, but these bloody moodswings. BTW i’m 24 so no close to menopause. Thanks. Please serious answers
